While Christ Was Walking Upside-Down on the Other Side of the Earth

1.

You were ill that winter.

The flowers in your windowsill
caught the flu,

their red petals turned
yellow

against the snow.

You remember those.

You remember the way
their scent

changed

from rose to lavender.

2.

And when Christ learned
to walk,

you weren’t surprised.

You thought he was another
human being

who would one day
carry

the groceries
up the front steps,

blue flowers
in his hands.

3.

Most of us learn
when we are young

that shopping carts
sink

when placed
in the ocean.

I watched a phone

flower

into a dozen
mockingbirds

that never learned

to sing.
